EXHIBITION
ALL ABOUT BANKSY Rome, May 5, 2021 – January 9, 2022.
Same place, same artist, new exhibition.
Thanks to about two hundred and fifty works from private collections, Chiostro del Bramante presents ALL ABOUT BANKSY: in Rome, from May 5, 2021 to January 9, 2022, a new exhibition to discover everything you can know about the world’s best-known unknown artist.
“Discover, approach, know, recognize Banksy. During our first exhibition A Visual Protest (September 2020 – March 2021), given the impossibility of staying open, we made a concentrated effort so that the public would not be disappointed, and would not be left without Banksy. This is how we came up with the idea of a second exhibition, of course dedicated to the artist and his works, and this desire was realized thanks to our collaboration with Butterfly & David Chaumet – Butterfly Art News, curators of the project”.
– Natalia de Marco, artistic direction DART – Chiostro del Bramante
Banksy can’t stop people from talking about him. From his latest work on the walls of Reading prison (UK), where Oscar Wilde was detained, to denounce the state of neglect since 2013, up to the millionaire auction to support the British health system, with the work Game Changer having sold for 16.75 million pounds.
Therefore, Chiostro del Bramante can not stop considering Banksy and offers, with this new exhibition, an encyclopedic insight into his work, thanks to an important documentary section, consisting of photographs, reports and videos. Here we provide a new opportunity to exhibit the work in the Renaissance building at the heart of Rome.
It is an in-depth narrative of the Banksy’s artistic language, thanks to the contribution of Butterfly & David Chaumet – Butterfly Art News, who for the first time have opened their archives, so entirely, for an exhibition.
“Everywhere you hear about Banksy. But what do you know about him except that he is famous and his identity is unknown? We’ve been documenting his career since the early 2000s, from the street and to exhibitions, and now we’re opening our archive.”
– Butterfly & David Chaumet – Butterfly Art News, curators
ALL ABOUT BANKSY is a catalogue raisonné that can be experienced, to discover works created from 1999 to 2020, with sections that breakdown the artist’s iconic and essential themes: the first Black Books, the many “rats” and then, politics, religion, power, war, children’s rights, immigration, refugees, the surveillance society, the environment, ecology, and the art market.
Never before exhibited works are a deep- dive into Banksy’s world and focus: among others, on the theme park not suitable for children Dismaland, the online store Gross Domestic Product, collaborations with singers and music groups, including the extensive series with the British rock band Blur.
There are artworks that are realized with different techniques and materials, that combine with a contextualization of the artist’s public interventions, work and exhibitions, including photographs, covers, posters, books, and records.
Three videos complete the exhibition to relive the most significant moments of Banksy’s career, including an exclusive and unpublished documentary that recounts twenty years of the artist’s career.
BANKSY
“Painting for me represents freedom”.
Supposedly born in Bristol in the early 1970s, Banksy is considered one of the greatest exponents of street art and was ranked 14th on ArtReview’s 2019 list of the one hundred most influential personalities in the art world. But no one knows his identity. What we do know is that he was forged in the Bristol underground scene, where he collaborated with several artists and musicians, and that his artistic production began in the late 1990s. From this moment on, he began to invade numerous cities, from Bristol to London, to New York, to Jerusalem to Venice with graffiti and various performances and infiltrations.
ALL ABOUT BANKSY is organized by DART Chiostro del Bramante in collaboration with Butterfly Art News curated by Butterfly Art News & David Chaumet under the patronage of Regione Lazio and Assessorato Crescita Culturale Roma Capitale media partner Sky Arte. The exhibition is accessible in respect and according to the regulations for the containment of Covid-19.
